Art by Deeling
Biography:

Deeling C. Gregory has painted in various media on paper and canvas for over forty years. Her subject matter ranges from figurative, to still life, to landscape and abstract. She is currently working on a series of digital paintings. She has completed at least one a day since January 2015. The process is one of self discovery and many of the paintings verge on surrealism. She is totally emerged in the digital project and is committed to completing at least a piece a day and posting it on social media–Art by Deeling on facebook, at least until the end of 2016.

A Note From the Artist:

I was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, and have spent many years in the San Francisco Bay Area as well as in Montana. My childhood in Hawaii was indeed magical, and I  think that all children should lead similar charmed lives. I had wonderful intelligent and creative parents and siblings and was treated with dignity and respect and a whole lot of love.

At the age of seventeen I left home for college at Stanford University in Palo Alto, California, where I proceeded to study all the academic subjects that the daughter of the chairman of the mathematics department at the University of Hawaii might be expected to study. My sister convinced me to take some art history courses and a figurative drawing class with her, and together with study abroad and exposure to the great art in museums and churches in Europe I was swept away.

After graduation I headed north to the San Francisco Art Institute, where I mostly drew from the figure and painted on my own. I lived there for thirty years, walking the hills, enjoying the incredible views and utterly fascinated by the ever changing panoply of faces and cultures.

I currently live and work in Montana. Needless to say, there is still a lot of culture shock involved. Montana is not as cosmopolitan as the San Francisco Bay Area, and I will always be considered an outsider here! I live in a nuclear outpost in the heart of a mostly rural ranch and farm area. Still, the landscape is beautiful, the winters are harsh, and I find the populace  somewhat intriguing. I indulge my wide ranging passion for abstraction, expressionist, surrealism and realism in my encounters with wildlife, cowboys, lotus blossoms and landscapes, both outside my window and in my mind’s eye.

I have not completely traded in my paint brushes for the computer mouse, but working on the computer screen has opened an entire universe and given  me untold creative freedom. It is with a sense of wonder that I approach each painting, knowing only that fresh surprises await.

I hope you will enjoy sharing my journey of discovery!

A Poem:

Sun latitudes, sonorous gems,
The light flickers, shadows dart,
Leafy imps and pungent fruit,
Dolorous blooms,
The tinkling of jade,
Teardrops rippling,
Crashing waves,
Still water,
Birdsong,
A child smiles

Poem 2:

Lotus blossoms, one, two, three,
Greener than the greenest horns,
Flying ponies, pink and red,
Also flying, birds of prey,
Horses, riders on the shore,
Themselves a spectacle…
